I’ve done a remarkably bad job of keeping in touch with anyone from high school. Sorry about that. I’d like to say I’ll do better and maybe I will but for obvious reasons, don’t hold your breath. I will say that this web site is a great idea. I hope it will stay up and running after the reunion because, honestly, it’s probably the only chance I have to keep informed of anything going on.

What have I been doing? I wish I had a story filled with adventure and drama but, honestly, I don’t. I graduated with an Honors degree in political science and speech communications from Gonzaga in 1983. I moved to Minneapolis to go to law school at the University of Minnesota in August of that year figuring I would be in Minnesota 3 years and a day, maybe two, depending on how long it took to load up a van and move back to the Northwest.

But then, strange things happened. I got a clerkship with a justice on the Minnesota Supreme Court for my first year after law school graduation. I then went to work for a big firm in Minneapolis where I spent 14 years working on some very interesting things -- I was one of the attorneys for the professional football players who sued the NFL over free agency. We also represented Michael Jordon, Patrick Ewing and several other professional basketball players in a short lived antitrust case against the NBA.

It also gave me the greatest single day of my life (yes, even above the birth of my 3 kids) -- January 2, 2001, when a judge in Northern Louisiana issued an order directing the release of Albert Burrell from death row at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola. We proved Albert and his co-defendant were not guilty of a 1986 double murder. At one point, Albert was 18 days from execution before a stay was issued. I got to be at Angola when he was released. My nephew called me the next day and said "there's a story about a guy in Louisiana on CNN that has someone who looks just like you on it." Turned out, it was me. The fringe benefit of that case was that it gave me the opportunity to spend St. Patrick's Day, New Year's Eve and Mardi Gras in New Orleans. If you haven't experienced New Orleans, you really should. I'm going back in September with a group from Gonzaga to do construction work on houses for folks still displaced by Katrina.

I left my old firm in 2002 -- it had grown to about 170 lawyers from the 60 or so when I started and am now with a small firm, two lawyers and five staff people (including a paralegal who has worked for me for almost 20 years -- whenever she hears me say that, she makes me disclose that when she started working for me, she was just a child). It's a lot more fun and a whole lot less political.

Outside of work, I coach my kids basketball and baseball teams and am concluding my two year term as President of the Eastview Athletic Association. Talk about being the only fire hydrant in 500 dog town. Wow, the things I get to hear about!

The three years and a day or two has grown into 25 years and counting -- the snow is like quicksand, the more you struggle to get away, the more it sucks you in. Well, that and the men's room at the Minneapolis airport, at least according to former Idaho Senator Larry Craig.
